I have two reasons for writing the Ulitmate Guide to Shopping for a Stylish Capsule Wardrobe 1. It saves money and time for women because the pieces bought can last you a long time and are easily combined for a lot of variety in your wardrobe and 2. The world needs more women that look and act more polished in timeless pieces.
Ever since college, I knew I had to choose clothes that would last me longer than one season for economic reasons, so I bought clothes that were quality and whose style was timeless. I remember volunteering to write an article in a magazine creation class about how to choose pieces that could be mixed and matched well–I wish I knew where that article was. I can tell you that I still have pieces from college that are still as beautiful and applicable today as they were nearly ten years ago! That fact is evidence that this capsule wardrobe idea works.
The sources I share are pieces that you will likely never regret buying and will last you longer than the year of trendy clothing.
I love the classic, polished look and I steer clear of branded clothing. In junior high, I was a die hard Hurley, Volcom and Etnie girl. The clothing and shoes I bought then did not last long and even if they did, I wasn’t keen on wearing the clothes that were obviously outdated.
I consider a capsule wardrobe a sign of a mature, practical and stylish woman. Think Audrey Hepburn, Kate Middleton, Princess Diana and Emma Watson. Even if you don’t have the kind of money these women have, you can adopt similar styles within your budget.
I hope you can use the lists below to help you create outfits that look and feel great for a long time. I have also listed accessories that you can add for personal flare.

This is pretty much my favorite look. Black and white is so sleek and versatile.
White button up shirt
Blazer
Black and white cardigan
Tote bag
I am a sucker for polka dots. This polka dot shirt is amazing!
Jeans and a t-shirt will never go out of style!
White, Black, striped and polka dot shirt
Jean jacket or chambray button down
Sneakers
Booties
Flats
Sun Hat
The pieces above will be staples in your wardrobe and then you can add color and character through the accessories:
hats,
scarves,
belts,
jewelry,
bags,
sunglasses,
headbands.
Accessories are less expensive to buy, will follow trends a bit more and have a huge variety of patterns, colors and shapes.
If you want to have a classic look for your formal wear, add gold, silver, diamonds, pearls and traditional or solid prints.
If you want to add some fun and spunk to your casual outfits, add florals, bold colors, chunky or frilly jewelry.
Try to match your hair and makeup for the style you are trying to achieve with your outfit. Consider an up do with a formal pant suit and minimal makeup. If you are going casual, let your hair down and add some bold red lipstick to make a statement.
One of my favorite things about fashion and interior design is that is is a form of creation and expression. Let your wardrobe be practical, stylish and unique to you. I hope that this guide helps you save money and time, while not sacrificing your personal flare.
Best,
Lucy Jo
In the photo above I am wearing a red coat I found at Goodwill, made likely in the 80s. It is a beautiful coat in perfect condition and it has withstood the test of time. The color is bold and beautiful. I paired it with a black turtleneck I have had for, no joke, 10 years, a black and white polka dot skirt and black booties. Super simple, inexpensive and classic. I will try to take more photos of outfit ideas to share.
