Seven Principles of Interior Design in Summary

Balance:

A)Symmetrical-creates calm in a space,

B)Asymmetrical-harder to acheive but more natural and energetic looking,

C)Spherical (everything radiates from a round element like a chandelier or a round table.

Emphasis and Focus:

Focal point dominates the space and everything else compliments it.

Contrast:

A)color contrast,

B) shape contrast (circle with rectangle), or

C) space contrast: positive and negative space used efficiently

Rhythm and Repetition (Movement):

Repetition of color, texture or pattern, Alternation 2 or more elements alternating in a pre-planned fashion. For example, here is an ABAB pattern with decor-candlestick, art, candlestick art. Progression arrangements in ascending or descending order based on size, gradient or another characteristic.

Scale and Proportion:

high ceilings matched with tall furniture or large pillows with large sofa. Harmony-the items should look like they belong to each other.

Details:

adds beauty and interest into a room. Details in furniture, fabrics, window treatments, and wallpaper are key to creating unique design. Older items tend to have rich detail so instead of buying everything new consider buying vintage decor items that match your design and tell a historic story.

Harmony and Unity:

the interior design should be a guide for someone to understand the space. Everything in the space should compliment each other and transition smoothly.

“A good understanding of Alignment of objects, Similarity of color/pattern/texture, Proximity (spacing) of objects, Repetition (grouping) of elements based on similarity, Continuation and Overlapping of interior design elements are a few ways to achieve ‘Unity’ in an interior design arrangement.”
